Most of the weapons that we practice in Kobudo today have their origins in Okinawa. For example the tonfa were the handles used in millstones for grinding rice or corn, this design is now used by many police forces around the world as the long handled baton. Perhaps the most famous of these weapons is the Nunchaku, you'll recognize these if you've ever seen any of the Bruce Lee movies, they were originally rice flails! A weapon should be seen as an extensions of the martial-artist; the martial-artist being the weapon. We usually find that most of the techniques we practice using a weapon are also trained empty-handed. Most of the weapons will be used to block, parry, strike, throw, lock, thrust etc. The weapons with blades are also used to cut, stab, slash etc. With weapons, when we talk about throwing we are not going to throw the weapon, we are going to use the weapon to assist us to throw our opponent to the ground.
